PTE Core vs PTE Academic: Which One Do You Actually Need?

Kooroo blog cover comparing PTE Core and PTE Academic

Two tests, one brand, endless confusion. People book the wrong PTE every week — they study for months, sit the exam, and only then discover the score isn't accepted for what they need. Let's fix that in five minutes.

The one-line answer

PTE Academic is for study and for most general English-language visa requirements. PTE Core is built for Canadian economic immigration. They are different tests with different task types, different scoring, and different bodies that accept them. A great PTE Academic score does nothing for a Canadian PR application that asks for PTE Core, and vice versa.

What PTE Academic is for

PTE Academic is the test most people mean when they say "PTE". It's accepted by thousands of universities, and by the governments of Australia, New Zealand, and the UK (as PTE Academic UKVI for visa purposes). If your goal is a student visa, a skilled-worker visa to Australia, or admission to a university abroad, this is almost certainly the test you want.

It leans academic: you'll summarise written and spoken lectures, describe data from a chart, and re-tell an academic talk. The content assumes you're heading into an English-medium study or professional environment.

What PTE Core is for

PTE Core was approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for economic immigration. If you're applying through Express Entry or another economic program and want to prove your English with PTE, PTE Core is the version IRCC recognises.

The tasks are deliberately more everyday than PTE Academic — think workplace emails, voicemails, and real-life conversations rather than university lectures. The skills being measured are the ones you'd use living and working in Canada, not writing an essay.

Rule of thumb: studying or an Australia/UK visa → PTE Academic. Immigrating to Canada → PTE Core.

How the scoring differs

Both tests report on a 10–90 scale across the four skills, but they're read very differently:

  • PTE Academic scores are used directly against university cut-offs (often 50–79) and against visa bands — for example, Australia's points test reads PTE scores as Competent / Proficient / Superior English.
  • PTE Core scores are converted to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels, because Canada's entire immigration system runs on CLB. Your raw PTE Core number matters far less than the CLB level it maps to.

This is why you can't borrow a result from one test for the other: the receiving system is speaking a different language about your score.

A quick decision guide

  1. University or college abroad? → PTE Academic.
  2. Australia or New Zealand skilled visa? → PTE Academic.
  3. UK work or study visa? → PTE Academic UKVI (a Secure English Language Test version).
  4. Canadian PR through an economic program? → PTE Core.
  5. Not sure? → Read the exact wording of the organisation you're applying to. It will name the test. Never assume "PTE" means either one.

Before you book

Requirements change, and they change without much warning — Canada and the UK have both adjusted English rules recently. Always confirm the accepted test on the official IRCC, Home Affairs, or UKVI page for your specific program before you pay for an exam.

Kooroo is built to prep you for the post-2025 PTE the way it's actually scored now — including PTE Core for our Canada-bound learners — so the practice you do maps to the test you'll sit.

Frequently asked questions

Is PTE Core accepted for Express Entry?

Yes. IRCC recognises PTE Core for economic immigration, including Express Entry. Your PTE Core results are converted to CLB levels, which is what the system scores against. Always confirm current acceptance on the official IRCC page.

Can I use PTE Academic for Canadian immigration?

Generally no — for economic immigration Canada asks for PTE Core, not PTE Academic. Check the exact requirement for your program, because accepted tests differ between immigration, study permits and other streams.

Is PTE Core easier than PTE Academic?

It isn't 'easier' — it's different. PTE Core uses everyday, workplace-style content instead of academic lectures and essays, so it can feel more approachable, but it still tests all four skills rigorously.
